I’ve had a few books arrive at Casa Bookgirl this week and with the exception of one of them the rest were all a surprise to me. Isn’t that great?
The first one, which I had almost forgotten I had ordered, is Dance Night by Dawn Powell. This is the August reading selection for the Slaves of Golconda. Feel free to join in on the discussion or read along. I’d not heard of this author before so I’m looking forward to the book.
Then I got four books from my friend Isabel. She sent me two books which I hope to use for some altered book projects and then she sent me two books she’d read and wanted to share. The first one is Escher on Escher: Exploring the Infinite. Given how much I enjoyed the Letters of Van Gogh, I can’t wait to read something from another well-known artist. The other book Isabel sent me is one she recently reviewed and which sounded great to me, The Opposite House by Helen Oyeyemi.
I also received two ARCs which I hadn’t requested but am glad to have as they sound quite interesting. The first one is Many and Many A Year Ago by Selcuk Altun. This is a literary thriller taking the reader from Istanbul to Buenos Aires. It is published by Telegram Books, which is a new to me publishing house and whose catalog I’m going through only to add more books to my list.
The other ARC I received is what I’m sure to be a bestselling novel, Sacred Hearts by Sarah Dunant. I’ve already seen a lot of mentions of this book in the blogosphere. I’ve read a couple of Dunant’s novels and have really enjoyed them so I’m looking forward to this one too.
So, now to make some room in the shelves for the new additions.

Ooh, I think I’ll get the Dawn Powell book to join in on the Slaves discussion this time around! I have a biography of Dawn Powell on my shelf that I’ve never read, but I’ve heard she’s a really good writer 🙂

I love surprise packages! I haven’t read any of these, but that isn’t saying much. I am very much enjoying my time at my parents’ house in Indiana, but will anxiously await to see what came in the mail while I was gone!

Sounds like a good book week! I’d like to read something by Sarah Dunant–not sure if it would be her new one, or one of the thrillers I have on my shelves. Glad you got the Slaves book–I hope it’s as good as it looks. And now I have to go and check out Telegram books–they’re new to me.
Ahhh I am so jealous that you have the new Dunant novel! I just read a great review of it in the Times, I’m really glad she’s decided to revisit the subject of nunneries.
And you’ve got The Opposite House which sounds so creepy. Just the idea of a house haunted by the ghosts of racism sounds fantastically scary.

I need to pick up my copy of Dance Night, which I ordered from a local book shop, soon. I’m looking forward to getting to it and to learning about a new author!
I think I got a copy of Sacred Hearts, too. I’ve been thrown off my game a bit, this week, so pardon my uncertainty. Isn’t it fun getting books in the mail? I’m getting fewer, these days, but I always love opening the mailbox and finding a little parcel in bubble wrap or cardboard. Such fun.

Danielle – I’ve read her suspense novels too and thought those were good. I still haven’t read any of her historicals though so I’m looking forward to this one.

Bookfool, aka Nancy – I’m getting fewer too. I’ve stopped accepting a lot of ARCs this Summer because I was just getting overwhelmed with those. Did you stop accepting them or do you think publishers are just sending out less?
