Flying By

Where has February gone? I was just looking back over my list of books read and I’ve only read two books this month. Two. I’ve started several books and put them aside but I’m hoping that March will be a better reading month. It’s not really about the number of books read but hopefully fewer false starts.

I also wanted to say that I really enjoyed your comments on my post about Outlander. I haven’t picked it up again yet as I got distracted by another book but I will go back to it. I decided that even though I didn’t like the one scene I mentioned, I’m still very curious about other parts of the book so for that reason I’ll go back to it.

What book did I get distracted by? The Laws of Harmony by Judith Ryan Hendricks. I’m really enjoying this book. I think it’s just what I needed to get me out of my reading rut.

This weekend as usual, we had our date night at the bookstore and just as we were leaving I saw If Books Could Kill by Kate Carlisle, which is the second in the mystery series featuring a bookbinder. Well, you know I couldn’t leave that one behind so I treated myself to this new mystery.

Anyway, that’s about it for now. I think I’ll go catch up on my current read.

The Deal Breaker

We went to Dallas on the weekend and it was a rushed and busy trip but I was a lucky girl as my husband decided to do all of the driving and so that meant I got to read quite a bit. Yay.

outlander.jpgI decided to take Outlander with me because I figured it was a chunky enough book for the seven hour ride (to and from) and lucky for me the story was engaging and fun. I had a few quibbles with the main character, Claire who travels back in time and who I thought was a bit too nonchalant about it. I am sorry but I think I would have been freaking out a bit more than she did.

Anyway, still enjoyable though until about half way through the book and we get to one scene that just left me thinking “What?!” I really hate to mention spoilers but I think I have to so if you’ve not read the book and don’t want to be spoiled, look away now!

What was my big complaint? If you’ve read the books, I think you know. The scene where Jaime beats Claire and then she justifies it and all is good with them. Hello? I didn’t find this romantic, erotic, nothing. It was just a major letdown.

So now I’m kind of stuck as to what to do. Do I continue reading as I’ve already gotten through half of that chunkster or should I move on? Part of me wants to figure out how the end is resolved but I guess I just don’t want to read more about the “love story” as it doesn’t feel all that romantic to me. Ah well. So is it me? Did anyone else feel like this after reading this book?

Just Started

I got a bit distracted from reading one of my books because as I was organizing my desk I found the copy of BookPage I had picked up on a recent visit to BookPeople. I love that they have it available there. Not only am I enjoying the reviews but I am also glad I found it because I had jotted down two books which sounded interesting, and I wanted to remember to add them to my wishlist.

The two books are: The Dark Holds No Terrors by Shashi Deshpande, which sounds very moving and Salvage by Jane F. Kotapish. Has anyone read these?

semanticsofmurder.jpgAnyway, I finally did start a new book and as I was still thinking of mysteries I went with The Semantics of Murder by Afric Campbell. I am still at the beginning and so far I can’t say that this sounds like a mystery but I like what I’m reading and I can’t wait to see what happens.

The main character is a psychologist who will begin to use his patients’ stories for his own fiction writing. Oh doctor, that’s not a good thing.

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend. I’m hoping to get a bit of reading done and of course I’ll try to drop in at the bookstore for more browsing and maybe a treat for me.  More bookish talk soon.
