531

I did get to stay home from work (yea!) and finished cataloguing my new books in Bookpedia. I have 531 unread books. Why do I keep going to the library if I have so many books yet to read?

It’s been fun to see the books and organize them again. So many get stuck in the back of the shelves and I forget about them. As I’ve been going through each book sometimes I wonder why a particular one sounded so interesting in the first place. And, others I must have really wanted to read because I have duplicate copies of them.

Some of you asked me about Bookpedia. I know LibraryThing is a popular tool for cataloguing books and I like the the community feel to it. I guess the biggest reason why I went with Bookpedia is because I can download my library and/or wishlist to my iPod. Which I hope means, no more duplicate copies. Perhaps you can do that with LibraryThing too though.

Next I will be switching my wishlist (currently an excel spreadsheet) to Bookpedia and cataloguing the books I have read and are a part of my collection. I can tell there is much work ahead.

Wishing & Hoping

The stag bells, winter snows, summer has gone
Wind high and cold, the sun low, short its course
The sea running high.
Deep red the bracken; its shape is lost;
The wild goose has raised its accustomed cry,
Cold has seized the birds’ wings;
Season of ice, this is my news.
- Irish poem, 9th Century

It’s that time of the year in North Texas, time for winter weather warnings! I watched the news this evening and honestly there is nothing about the world or local news. It’s all about the potential snow/ice/winter weather we may have by tomorrow morning.

So this evening, I’ll go to bed and hope that the weather folks come through for me because if the weather is bad in the morning, I won’t be able to drive in to work. And, that means a day to lounge and read.

Besides, I am working on a BIG project. I’m cataloguing my books. I’m addicted to Bookpedia so I’ve got hours of fun ahead of me.

Poetry Is…

“Do you know what a poem is?” “No, what?” I would say. “A piece of dust.”

Well that’s what one of the characters in The Bell Jar thinks about poetry. I thought it was perfect timing and wanted to participate in Cam’s poetry meme that’s been making the rounds.

The first poem I remember reading/hearing/reacting to was… The poems that first caught my attention were those of Shel Silverstein. I thought they were funny and a bit insane.

I was forced to memorize (name of poem) in school and… I don’t remember having to memorize any poems for school. We barely read any either in Junior High or High School.

I read/don’t read poetry because… I read poetry but feel like I have to be in the mood. Like, when I’m looking for answers to life’s greatest questions sort of mood.

A poem or poet I’m likely to think about when asked about a favorite is… Some of my favorite poets are Billy Collins, Sandra Cisneros, Pablo Neruda, and Mary Oliver.

I write/don’t write poetry, but… I started writing poetry a few years ago and even had several poems published in some small journals but I haven’t felt the longing to write it in a while.

My experience with reading poetry differs from my experience with reading other types of literature… I tend to zip through books but when it comes to poetry I slow down, meditate on the poem and come back to it again and again.

I find poetry… Beautiful. I love the idea of a few words or lines encompassing so much emotion and so many thoughts.

The last time I heard poetry…Too long ago. I used to go to monthly poetry readings and slams but haven’t gone in ages. I really need to remedy that soon.

I think poetry is like… A discovery. Sometimes there are hidden messages, and poems often have different meanings for different readers. That’s what’s great about poetry, each one of us discovers something new in a poem.
