Halloween Weekend

Halloween is my most favorite holiday. I know some of you already know that and I know I’ve mentioned it before but really I just love it. The candy, the horror films, the costumes, oh my!

So what does a BookGirl do for Halloween?

  • Read The Raven by Edgar Allan Poe. Of course first check that windows and doors are locked tight.
  • Listen to La Llorona sung by Oscar Chavez. For those of you not familiar with this tale, check out this link.
  • Watch scary movies.
  • Work on a Day of the Dead story.
  • Eat lots of candy. Give out lots of candy. I always get this one mixed-up.

Hope everyone has a fun weekend.

Midnight Musings

I’m a night owl. Ever since I was a kid I always enjoyed staying up late. I always thought that something big and exciting would happen at the witching hour. What’s not so great, is getting older, having to wake up early for work and realizing that getting by on less than six hours of sleep continually is not a good thing.

However my good intentions of trying to go to sleep early are being met with some insomnia. I’ve battled that on and off for years and I’ve always thought that this is just how it’ll be for me. But how do I ever get caught up on my lost hours of sleep? How can I avoid almost falling asleep while on a conference call – okay maybe that has nothing to do with my needing more sleep.

Anyway, to that end I’ve been reading The Well-Rested Woman: 60 Soothing Suggestions for Getting a Good Night’s Sleep by Janet Kinosian. Kinosian covers everything from using Feng Shui, listening to lullabies to even using phototherapy in order to get a restful sleep.

My first thought is “Oh my god, I’m reading a self-help book”. You see, I think self-help books are great if people want them and get use out of them, however I will always read a couple of pages and ditch that for my fiction, mysteries, poetry, etc.

But, so far I’m liking this book. I’ve put some of the practices in place (no, not the listening to lullabies bit) and I’ll admit some of this is working. So I’ll keep you posted. Night-night.

Resolution

If you’ve been wondering why I haven’t mentioned which books I’ve checked out from the library lately it’s because, believe it or not, I haven’t checked out a book in almost four weeks.

Don’t call 911 yet, I’m quite alright, I just haven’t checked out any books. It’s been a struggle. I have gone to the library, but I’ve just petted the new books, I’ve walked up and down the aisles, and in the end I’ve walked away. Why am I torturing myself? Did I fail to pay a fine?

Nothing so drastic as that. It’s just that I realize if I don’t start reading some of the books from my stacks at home, I really will never get through them. Not only that but while I was going through some of my stacks trying to find the perfect book to read this weekend, I realized I’ve even got duplicate copies of one book. Reading the book jacket, I’m not so sure I know what made me think this was such a great book to buy – twice!

Plus, another reason to get through my stacks is, if there’s any way I expect my husband to get me books for Christmas presents then I probably should read the ones he got me last year.

Let’s see how long I can keep this up.
